Illene’s interest in ceramics has developed gradually over 25 years ago. She took classes at the Kalamazoo Institute of Art in Kalamazoo Michigan and Kalamazoo Valley College. She continues taking pottery workshops to get new inspirations for her work. She has sold her work through various galleries and juried art shows in the region. Even though she finds throwing on the wheel to be the most satisfying method, she also enjoys slab work, hand building, stamping and carving into her work to be exciting. She uses both red and white earthenware clay and glazes with vibrant colors.

She has been influenced by both Japanese and Southwest Pottery.
